Retiring in Thailand

Retiring in Thailand has many options. Some prefer the nightlife of Pattaya, others the rural life of Chiang Mai or Issaan. While others prefer the middle class expat community of Hua Hin or upscale Phuket. Everyone has a different view of how their retirement in Thailand should feel and look like. Thailand has much to offer over that of Spain or any of the other Asian countries.

Firstly the crime rate in Thailand is very low. Pattaya has had its ups and downs however you need to use common sense in Pattaya more than anything else. Always stay out of dark or dodgy streets and always stay in the areas where there are loads of people. On the flip side, Pattaya is changing fast with investment in infrastructure and the level of English in Pattaya is higher than anywhere else in Thailand. Thailand is also well known for its low cost and high levels of healthcare. On average a visit to the dentist will set you back about US$150 for root canal treatment or US$15 to have your teeth cleaned. This using the latest in medical equipment.

Bangkok is well known for its excellent hospitals and around Thailand in tourist areas even more modern hospitals have been built to accomodate the amount of expats moving to Thailand. What most expats like about Thailand is that everything is so laid back. If it can be done tomorrow, it will be done the day after. Time is not an issue in Thailand and you will hear the expression of Sabai Sabai all the time. This means relax, there is no rush. For someone retiring this comes as a big welcome from the everyday rat race one has experienced back home. With very cheap food, accomodation and health care, Thailand is for everyone, not only the wealthy. In Thailand you would be able to get by on US$1,000 per month to whatever your limit may be. If you are looking at Issaan or North of Thailand it gets even cheaper. In Issaan you could rent a very good and modern house for about US$140 per month. Its very easy upcountry as people are even more friendly than in the cities much like the world over.
